My daughter and I collect shells as we walk the shoreline and we began to notice that our favorite pieces were the shells with natural cracks or holes allowing us to string them on chains and wear them around our necks as souvenirs of our time together. This is a tradition that began with my own father when I was a child. It struck me that we were finding such beauty in nature’s natural “imperfections” and, thus, this charm was cast from a small broken whelk shell we found and wore around our necks. It’s a reminder to me, that when I feel the pull towards an idea of perfection, that perfection doesn’t exist. Nature doesn’t make mistakes and here we are.
